My experience in the Insurance claims industry led me to discover just how many Small Medium Enterprises insure their assets incorrectly. Generally the reason for this would be either poor advice or buying a policy purely based on cost.

When the only communication between a broker or Insurer and the business is the posted annual renewal terms the danger is that changes to a business year on year are not reflected in the policy. The broker does not speak and the client forgets to inform his insurers of changes within the business. The onus is always on the policyholder to ensure the cover is correct.

My belief is that the onus ought to be on the Broker/Insurer to ascertain the correct information wherever possible. The consequences of not having correct cover could mean financial disaster for a company, job losses and ultimately the business ceasing to trade altogether.
